Tom Meyer

Tom Meyer is an urban planner who is currently serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA within the Department of Planning + Urban Design at the Unified Government of Wyandotte County – Kansas City, Kansas. In this role, Tom has worked on a variety of planning and design projects including; an implementation plan for expanding a bike-share program, the design of numerous public outreach documents, and as part of a team developing an existing conditions report for the Armourdale Neighborhood of Kansas City, KS.

Tom received his bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning & Design from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in May of 2020. After his first year in the program he was awarded the Hugh Zimmer Equity Planning Internship by the faculty of the UMKC Architecture, Urban Planning + Design Department (AUP+D). He fulfilled this internship by working for the UMKC Center for Neighborhoods where he served as a Planning Liaison for the Blue Hills Neighborhood Association of Kansas City, Missouri. Tom ended his second year of study by being awarded First Place in the J.C. Nichols Student Prize competition for his redevelopment design for the Landing Mall site at 63rd & Troost Ave in Kansas City. Upon graduation, Tom was awarded departmental honors for his strong academic work and dedication to UMKC’s AUP+D community.

In the summer of 2019, Tom worked as an intern for the Development Management Division of the Kansas City, Missouri City Planning & Development Department. In this role he provided research assistance on the subjects of accessory dwelling units and on the common conditions placed on development projects.

In his free time, Tom has volunteered with the Better Block KC organization to help setup traffic calming demonstrations around Kansas City. Tom’s passion for high quality public spaces stems from his many years riding his bicycle, using public transit, and walking around his home neighborhood of Midtown Kansas City.
